There are no castles in Groningen, but there are castles! The borg lords used to live here on their large estate. There is a very beautiful one in Slochteren: the Fraeylemaborg. You can do a treasure hunt in the castle and learn everything about the former residents. The large park behind the castle is very beautiful, and extra fun in the summer because of the Barefoot Path!
From the deposit the route goes towards the Groenedijk. There are three mills here, all polder mills. This drained the land so that farmers could grow crops on it.
The Baggerputten is a nature reserve where many species of plants, trees, insects and birds occur. There are 20 butterfly species and 25 dragonfly species. You can search for real animals, but also digital ones. With the Perfect Earth Animal app you can look for digital animal cards in the forest around the dredging pit in De Baggerputten, a bit like with Pokémon.
Also fun along the way: the Pancake Ship in the harbor of Slochteren. There are also catering facilities at the deposit and in several other places in Slochteren.
