Tour of the North Holland Dune Reserve: along the dune lake and visitor centre

Your route starts at Bike Shop Egmond, in the heart of Egmond aan Zee. Cycle through the large silent dunes of the North Holland Dune Reserve and get to know the widest dunes in the Netherlands. Around 1900, the province of North Holland bought an 1100-hectare site from Princess Zu Wied with the plan to start a hospital for the mentally ill. Only 80 hectares were needed for this hospital, so the rest of the site could be used for the construction of the North Holland Dune Reserve. The oldest Scots pines of the dune reserve date from 1860: remnants of the first attempts to forest the dune area. You pass the meadow of Brasser, a dune lake where you can spot birds.
