Description

Welcome and nice that you are going to participate in the summer cycling tour in the area of Terneuzen, Axel and Zaamslag.

This route starts in Terneuzen in the Basaltpromenade.
A fun fact about the Basaltpromenade is that at number 8 there is a Tragel housing complex. Here there are daytime activities but also housing for people with an intellectual disability and/or disability. It is currently difficult to take a look here, but if the residents are busy outside, they will really appreciate it if you wave to them!

When you follow the route towards Zaamslag you will pass café de Griete, where they have many tasty drinks and you can always go for something tasty if you are thirsty or hungry.

If you follow the route to junction 41, you will be near Zaamslag. If you are thirsty, here are a few suggestions to stop for a drink.
At Plein 23 on the Plein you can always enjoy a nice drink and even a snack if you're hungry.
Also nice to visit in Zaamslag is the shell museum in Zaamslag. You can also find these on the Plein in Zaamslag (Plein 3)

If you continue the route from junction to junction, you will eventually reach junction 74. If you wander off the route a little bit, you can choose to make a stop at one of the terraces in Axel. For example, consider a nice drink on the beautiful terrace of Family Axel, which is located in the old church in Axel opposite the Albert Heijn. You can also get a delicious sandwich at Karins in Axel  if you're hungry, you can find Karins near the Albert Heijn. Fancy a drink? Then maybe stop at Eva\\\'s Passie for a drink and a snack.
Axel has a rich war history, for example, next to the Family terrace you will find the Polish war cemetery in Axel. A number of important Polish soldiers who played an important role in the liberation of Axel during the Second World War are buried here. Here you will also find a sign that is part of the liberation route that you can walk in Axel. This consists of 8 of these signs that are located on and around Szydlowski Square. Definitely recommended to read these stories.
There are also more war monuments in and around Axel that you can visit. For more information about this, take a look at the following link: tracesofwar.nl/sights/Axel-Terneuzen.htm?provinceid=10

Then return to junction 74 and continue your route.
Between junctions 73 and 29 you pass through the village of Spui.
Here you can probably see the Spui windmill while cycling and if you are lucky it might even be running. Feel free to cycle towards the mill to take a look and then return to the route.

If you feel like stopping during the last part of the route between junctions 29 and 28, it is best to leave the route and enter Terneuzen. On the market or along the Zeedijk you will find several nice catering establishments where you can have a drink and/or eat. You will have to deviate a little further from the route and cycle towards the center

For all the above suggestions, we recommend that you check the opening hours on the website in advance and possibly even make a reservation so that you are sure you have a spot.

We wish you a lot of fun cycling this beautiful route and enjoy it!
