Tour of Cranendonck from Maarheeze

Your route starts at Cafe-Terras Ons Lieske. In the rural area of Soerendonk, behind the monumental Cranendonck villa, there is an almost round site, completely surrounded by canals. These are the remains of Cranendonck Castle. It was probably built in the thirteenth century and was inhabited by various noble families over the centuries. The castle was destroyed by the French in 1673. It was named after the crane that lived in the area. Through inheritance, sale and marriage, the castle once became the property of Oranje Nassau. Baron van Cranendonk is one of the many titles of King Willem Alexander. You also walk through the Cranendonckse Bos, a small-scale landscape with moist forests full of tall pines, oaks and birches, with high rounded fields all around.
