Description
You can enjoy cycling through the National Landscape River Area. On the dike along the banks of the Lek you have a beautiful view of the winding river and the vast surrounding landscape. A nice quiet route to clear your head and soak up some Dutch cultural history.
Work on the Waalse Wetering
From Nieuwegein you cycle towards the Lek. You will then pass through the beautiful Oudegein park, which functions as the city's green lung. Near Culemborg you cycle through the grassland and reedlands of the Goilberdingerwaard. On the other side of the Lek you pass Werk aan de Waalse Wetering. This fort from 1878 was intended to stop enemies at the Vuylkoopstroomrug. Then you drive through the charming little village of Tull and't Waal. When you are back in Nieuwegein you can take a look at Stormerdijk, a former castle of which only the country house from 1809 is still standing.

Just past Everdingen you will pass two forts from the New Dutch Waterline. The first fort you pass is Fort Everdingen from 1847. Together with Fort Honswijk, which is located on the other side of the Lek, this fort hermetically sealed off the high passage of the Lek dikes and the floodplains. The fort can only be visited from the outside. A little further you will find Werk aan het Spoel. In 1815, a fortified lock was constructed here in the Lekdijk to allow the area behind it to be flooded in the event of a hostile attack.
