Explore the countryside of Lommel

The countryside of the Belgian town of Lommel is exceptionally natural. Here you drive through vast forests and along the green strip of canals and lakes. A quiet route that guarantees a relaxing day in the Limburg outdoors.

Soon after boarding you will drive past the Zilvermeer and the Rauwse Meer, one of the largest lakes in Flanders. One moment you are driving between the trees, the next moment you are looking out over the water. You cross the Bocholt-Herentals Canal, after which you drive north along the Kwaadmechelen-Schoten Canal. This canal was dug out with a shovel in the mid-nineteenth century in fifteen years. The arid Kempen soil around the canal became somewhat moister, so that you can enjoy the many plant and tree species while cycling.

In the vast forests around Postel, civilization seems far away. Coniferous trees dominate the view, sometimes there are tufts of heathland or fields, sometimes you suddenly feel some cooling on your cheeks or arms from a stream that flows next to the cycle path. The landscape has a rich history. Pedlars used to travel along the sandy paths from market to market with their merchandise in a basket on their back. When it got dark, smugglers took over with illegal goods.

After the forests of Postel you wait a few kilometers along the Bocholt-Herentals Canal. It's nice to pedal along the fresh water. Lommel is on the right, and there are some nature reserves on your left. South of Lommel you delve into the forests again, mainly Scots pines grow on the wastelands.
