Explore the Belgian Merode by bike. This area is about 1500 hectares and was owned by the princes De Merode for centuries. Nowadays, recreationalists can also enjoy the old-fashioned rural peace and friendliness in this area. So quickly get on your steel horse and go on your way.
Different landscapes
At the start of the route you cycle through the forests of Hertberg. A nature reserve that has been completely forested since the eighteenth century. Most of the forests in the area were planted on heathlands around the twentieth century. Then you cycle into the nature reserve De Langdonken with a series of swamp forests, heathlands and beautiful blue grasslands. Just above Averbode you cycle through the extensive forests that were created around the abbey of Averbode. In addition to forests, you will find fens, marshes and heathlands here. The heathland and the forest edges are grazed by a herd of about three hundred sheep. Always nice to see.
Take a look at Veerle
This route takes you right past the village of Veerle. Once upon a time, you would find an open landscape with shrubs here, but over the centuries Veerle changed into an independent municipality with several hamlets. In 1976, the municipality was incorporated into the municipality of Laakdal. Here you can, among other things, take a look at the castle of Veerle, a spacious country house that used to belong to a Spanish noble family.
