The nature-rich countryside of Herselt

Different landscapes
At the start of the route you cycle through the forests of Hertberg. A nature reserve that has been completely wooded since the eighteenth century. Most of the forests in the area were planted on moors around the twentieth century. You then drive into the De Langdonken nature reserve with a succession of wetland forests, heathlands and beautiful blue grasslands. Just above Averbode you cycle through the vast forests that have been planted around the abbey of Averbode. In addition to forests, you will find fens, swamps and heaths here. The heath and the forest edges are grazed by a flock of about three hundred sheep. Always nice to see.

Take a look at Veerle
This route takes you right past the town of Veerle. Once you found an open landscape with shrubbery here, but over the centuries Veerle changed into an independent municipality with various hamlets. In 1976 the municipality merged into the municipality of Laakdal. Here you can take a look at the castle of Veerle, a spacious country house that used to belong to a Spanish noble family.
