Description
This route takes you through the gently sloping surroundings of the Belgian towns of Balen, Olmen and Leopoldsburg. The landscape consists of stream valleys, farmland and forests that alternate. Add peace and Flemish geniality to that and you have the perfect area for a beautiful cycling route.
Olmen and Leopoldsburg
Near the town of Olmen you cycle through the basin of the river De Grote Nete. In this swampy area you will find swamp forests, hay meadows, hedgerows and meadows. A little further on the route you cycle through Leopoldsburg. In 1835, King Leopold I set up a barracks here as a defense against the Netherlands.
