Description

This beautiful capital of the province of Gelderland is located on the Lower Rhine. Arnhem is known as a green city. This is due to the many and large parks, but also due to its location on the southern edge of the Veluwe. We know Arnhem of course from the Second World War of the famous battle of Arnhem, in which a bloody battle was fought for the bridge over the Nederrijn. But Arnhem is also the city of trolleybuses. As the only city in the Netherlands, the buses are connected to an overhead line. From the parking lot where this walk starts, you can walk along the stately Velperweg in five minutes to the Dutch Wine Museum. This museum is a nice stop for the wine lover, but also for those who don't like it.

The museum is located in the old wine cellars of the Robbers & van den Hoogen wine trade. The exhibition shows all aspects of viticulture, including the vineyard and vines, harvesting, crushing and pressing of the grapes, fermentation and bottling. In addition, all kinds of consumer items related to viticulture and consumption are exhibited, including corkscrews, bottles and sherry casks signed by prominent Dutchmen. When you have passed the Wine Museum, you walk through the Klarendal district. In this trendy district you will find special fashion shops and studios where you can buy clothing and accessories from Arnhem fashion designers. The K10-Arnhem-Districtsbunker mini-emergency network on Agnietenstraat is something of a completely different order. During the Cold War, people prepared for the worst. One of the concerns in the event of a nuclear war was the loss of normal communication. That is why work was done in the greatest secrecy on secure telephone connections. A special emergency network was installed with protected telephone exchanges, such as in this district bunker in the middle of the Klarendal district.

This city walk through green Arnhem naturally leads through the largest park in the city: Park Sonsbeek. This slightly hilly park is largely wooded, but offers breathtaking views of Arnhem city due to the height differences. Huis Sonsbeek, also known as'de Witte Villa\\\', is located halfway through the park, slightly hidden in the woods. The neighborhood just outside the park is also slightly uphill, which results in nice street views. If you have crossed the railways, Museum Arnhem is in front of you, an art museum with mainly realistic art. The museum is housed in the former gentlemen's club for sugar planters repatriated from the Dutch East Indies. It is beautifully situated on the high banks of the Lower Rhine. From the museum you dive into the shopping streets of Arnhem. A bit of shopping if you feel like it. You walk back to the car via the Rijnstraat and the Vijzelstraat with mainly nationally known large retail chains. We hope you enjoyed this introduction to Arnhem and look forward to seeing you again!
