From Emmeloord to Blokzijl through the Kuinderbos

Description
You can cycle briskly across the flat land of polders with farms, ditches and canals in the vicinity of Emmeloord. Along the way you can enjoy endless views. Get to know the Noordoostpolder, the largest municipality in the Netherlands, and be amazed.
Through the Kuinderbos
The starting point of this route is in Emmeloord. From here you set course for the Kuinderbos. Just outside Emmeloord you cycle past vast potato and flower bulb fields. You then cycle straight through the Kuinderbos, the largest contiguous forest in the Noordoostpolder. This forest was planted in the period from 1947 to 1953. No less than 23 different types of ferns grow here. You then cycle on to Kuinre, Blankenham, Blokzijl and Marknesse. Between Kuinre and Blokzijl you cycle over a dike that separates the old land from the new land of the Noordoostpolder. The biggest difference are the winding locks in the old country and the dead straight locks in the newer part.
The layout of the polder
Around Emmeloord you will find connecting roads to ten smaller villages in a kind of star shape. This layout of the polder with one town as a center is based on the model of the German geographer Christaller. The centers are within cycling distance of each other, although that is no longer so important nowadays now that most people have a car. This was not the case when the polder was set up.
