Description
National Park De Maasduinen is right on the German border. It sometimes feels like you are abroad, because the river dunes provide quite a difference in altitude. Perfect for the e-bike!
Your route starts at Visitors Centre De Maasduinen. You can immediately have a coffee at Bosbrasserie In de Sluis. Located in a lock, with a beautiful terrace on the water. You are sitting above a narrow canal between the Leukermeer and Reindermeer: you will encounter both of these later on your route.
First you drive via Nieuw-Bergen to Afferden. Just above that you dive into National Park De Maasduinen. You drive further towards Landgoed Bleijenbeek, where you drive right past the castle ruins of the same name. In 1945 the medieval Kasteel Bleijenbeek was destroyed by bombs from the English RAF, since then nothing has really changed. A rugged, romantic place.
A little later you cycle right past the Reindersmeer, also part of the National Park. The former sand quarry is now a beautiful nature reserve that is loved by birds. Even the harrier and the sea eagle are spotted here. The Leukermeer, a little further on, also originated as a sand quarry. It has a completely different atmosphere: here you can swim, surf and sail. Holiday feeling at its best!
