Description

Leave the city behind you, you no longer hear honking but croaking frogs. There is always something to see on this route. Hares zigzagging at full speed through the fields and with a bit of luck you will see the blue flash of a kingfisher. Via the Haarzuilens estate you cycle a beautiful route along Woerden towards Kockengen.
On the edge of the village of Kockengen is the Kockengense Mill with the former miller's house next to it. On Saturdays, the volunteer miller runs the polder mill and can be visited.
The first mention of the Kockengse Mill is in 1653, which is why we use that year as the year of construction. The year 1726 indicates the year in which the upper house was replaced. The mill operated until approximately 1960 and drained the 341 hectare Polder Kockengen. Since 1962, this has been done with an electric pumping station. Fortunately, the historic mill has been preserved and can now run and grind again since a major restoration in 2012. The Kockengense Mill now even functions as a reserve pumping station.
