Description

More than three quarters of Dwingelderveld National Park consists of forest, heath, drifting sands, water and peat. One of the most beautiful peat areas is the Holtveen, a wet strip where numerous birds breed. It connects to the Kraloër Heide, which together with the Dwingelose Heide forms the largest heathland in the Netherlands. Outside the boundaries of the national park, the route leads through the Drenthe esdorp landscape. Right around villages such as Ruinen and Ansen are the high arable lands, the ash trees, and the low stream valleys were used as grass and hay land.
NB: between junctions 56 and 55 the route follows a sandy path; during drought this can be very loose.
