The Meinweg is a unique terraced landscape, with steep transitions between the terraces. Geologically speaking, this is extremely special for the Netherlands. The terraces were created over tens of thousands of years by the erosion of the Meuse and shifts in the earth's crust along the three fault lines that run through the area. One of these fault lines is the well-known Peel edge fault. Right across the terraces, two streams (the Roode Beek and the Boschbeek) drain the water from the upper plateau to the Roer.
The National Park is located east of Roermond, is surrounded by Germany on three sides and is part of the German-Dutch border park Maas-Swalm-Nette, approximately 10,000 hectares in size. The De Meinweg National Park has an area of approximately 1,800 hectares.
In the Meinweg area, forests, heaths, fens and stream valleys provide a varied landscape. Within Limburg, De Meinweg is the only area where the adder still occurs, which is why the adder appears in the De Meinweg logo.
On this site you will find all kinds of information about De Meinweg National Park and its surroundings.
