Description

The Lutterzand originated in the late Middle Ages. Overgrazing and cutting of heather sods caused bare spots in the vegetation. The wind was given free rein, causing sand drifts to appear. To counter this, Scots pines were planted. The oldest and lowest sand layers on the banks of the Dinkel are up to twenty centuries old. Previous heathland fires can be recognized by the dark layers. The Meuleman estate, with 340 hectares, makes up the largest part of the nature reserve. The estate, owned by the Twente textile family Scholten, is largely freely accessible.
