Deventer... get a breath of fresh air along the IJssel

Hanseatic city Deventer has a beautiful old center. You will see many monumental buildings that remind you of times gone by. On the tree-lined Brink you can see De Waag, a beautiful museum from 1531. At the large cemetery you can see the old town hall and the Lebuinus Church. It is wonderful to travel for miles along the IJssel and enjoy nature and tranquility. In the IJsselvallei you cycle through a landscape full of natural beauty. You have a beautiful view over the grasslands, reed collars and tufts of trees. Sometimes you look all the way to the IJssel. The houses along the IJsseldijk are striking. These often have an entrance on the dike and an entrance one floor lower at village level. There are also some beautiful monumental farms. Just after junction 89 you will see an LAACC bunker from 1952 disguised as a barn on the left. During the Cold War, it served as the command center of the former IJssel Line. In Welsum you will see Houdt Braef Stant, a flour mill from 1856. You can cross the IJssel with a ferry, and in beautiful Olst you will pass, among other things, the medieval village church. Groot Hoenlo Castle is just outside Olst. This manor with estate was first mentioned in 1233. The Nijendal behind it is a beautiful estate with many old landscape elements.
