Mookerhei and Mookerplas

Mook is located in a beautiful, hilly nature reserve in the far north of Limburg. You cycle past the chapel of Our Lady of the Will-o'-the-wisps. That has everything to do with the Battle of the Mookerheide. Will-o'-wisps would have been visible on the heath, the souls of the soldiers who died during this battle. Only when a chapel was built did the will-o'-the-wisps disappear. The current chapel is not original, it was built in 1890 as a replacement. The Mookerplas was created by the extraction of sand and gravel. Today it is a well-visited recreational lake for water sports enthusiasts.
