The route is based on the cycle junction system: 66, 24, via Vatrop and Stroe, then the exit to Recreatiepark Wiringherlant to go to the Periscoop Kijk over de Dijk, then back to the main road, then the route continues via 23 , 76, 18, 19,20,21, 67,24 and back to the Haven.
The former Wadden Island of Wieringen is surrounded by the Wadden Sea, Amstelmeer and IJsselmeer. Wieringen is officially no longer an island since the construction of the Afsluitdijk. But you still have the island feeling here!
Wieringen offers a hilly and characteristic landscape with cozy villages such as Den Oever and Hippolytushoef. The rolling landscape was formed in the Ice Age.
At various points you have beautiful views of water and land. That's why this route is also called'Most beautiful viewpoints\\\'.
The cycle route starts and ends in Den Oever , a historic fishing port with a still active fishing fleet. Every Saturday morning, the Zee Verse Vismarkt takes place here, where you can pick your own fish or eat a fish.
A few hundred meters from the harbor is
the Wadden Viewpoint, where you have beautiful views of the Wadden Sea.
Shrimp fishing, walking on the mudflats, watching seals or making boat trips. From the port of Den Oever there are various possibilities to enjoy the Wadden Sea.
The route heads towards Oosterland, where the 12th century Michael's Church dominates the view, with charming houses built for the senior staff of the Zuiderzee Works Execution Company.
Via Vatrop , where there is a
beautiful viewpoint over the Wadden Sea World Heritage, you continue cycling to Stroe.
The
Wieringer Eilandmuseum Jan Lont is located here, where you can experience and taste the island life of a century ago. In the spring,'forgotten\\\' vegetables are grown in the garden, which are put on the menu by local catering establishments. The Heathen Chapel is also located in Stroe. The story goes that Willibrord would have founded a first church around the year 700.
Recreatiepark Wiringherland is signposted after the museum. The route takes a turn to the leisure park, and then back to the original route. The reason is a unique work of art \\\'Look over the Dike\\\'.
Look over the dike There is a special work of art on Wieringen near Stroe. A robust, twelve meter high square tower made of Corten steel. The artwork is located at the bottom of the Rinkeweelsdijk, which runs along the mudflats, at Recreatiepark Wiringherlant. The shape is reminiscent of a church tower.
The artwork contains a digital periscope, which visitors can use to look over the dike, to and across the mudflats towards Texel without having to climb the dike.
Wandering within the image range of the periscope of Kijkpunt Wieringen, the visitor becomes part of the work of art by looking at the mudflats in a special way. A unique experience and play opportunities for visitors under and on the dike. Even for those sitting at home, because Kijkpunt Wieringen can be reached via the internet 24 hours a day.
The song'De Overkant\\\' by Drs.P. beautifully conveys the feeling of our curiosity about that which we cannot look at without difficulty. For example, we climb mountains and towers or dive into the deepest depths.
The Wadden Sea reveals itself in a different way each time, reveals itself in a different way each time, and the visitor thus develops his knowledge and attitude towards nature in general and that of the Wadden area in particular.
The artwork is a design by Niko Hoebe, which was originally placed in 2003 and will be equipped with a digital periscope in 2020 so that the images can also be viewed via the internet.
More information:
www.kijkpuntwieringen.nl The route continues through Westerland .
Westerland is located on the Amstelmeer. The Amstelmeer is very popular among water sports enthusiasts; especially windsurfing is popular. Kitesurfing is also widely practiced. This produces beautiful pictures. The Lutjestrand is a pleasant swimming beach. There is also catering and a campsite with an ice cream parlor. The best ice cream in Wieringen and the surrounding area is sold here.
The continuation of the route is a round of Amstelmeer. The dike is the first to be cycled over. At the end of the dike (towards Den Helder)
a unique vantage point over the Wadden Sea has been created.
The dike was built in 1924 and connected the former island of Wieringen with the mainland. The construction of the Amsteldiepdijk was not without problems: the nature reserve De Verzakking, which lies to the right of the dike, was created by the slipping of dike soil. The Amsteldiepdijk thus turned out to be an important training ground for the engineers who later built the Afsluitdijk.
During the round the nice town of
Van Ewijcksluis is passed. And via Westerland you cycle back to the Port of Den Oever, both the starting and finishing point.
Spend the night on Wieringen Ranging from a B & B in a farm, barn or fisherman's house, to sleeping in a place where engineers of the Afsluitdijk used to live. Visit
visithollandskroon.nl under accommodation.
