Amsterdam, North Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 218607
Provided by: Groots Genieten
From the start, via junction 56, you drive up along the Amstel. Halfway you cross the Magere Brug, the authentic drawbridge that is beautifully lit in the evening.
Attention
On the busy Waterlooplein, be careful not to get in anyone's way. For the less experienced city cyclist, you need eyes and ears in front and behind. From the Waterlooplein, you cycle into the Jodenbreestraat, where you will find the Rembrandt House Museum at the end. This is the house where Rembrandt lived between 1639 and 1658. The Nieuwmarkt is a beautiful old part of Amsterdam with the monumental Waag in the center. There is a market on the square every day. A funny detail is that on this route you take a short ferry ride. You get on behind the Central Station. The Municipal Transport Company's ferries depart every ten minutes. They are free and take you to Amsterdam Noord within five minutes.
Outside Amsterdam, it is easy to breathe on the narrow roads along the water. Surrounded by meadows, Broek in Waterland seems like a real farming village. Yet it was originally a skippers' village, where many shipowners, captains and wealthy merchants came to live in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Their wealth made Broek in Waterland one of the most prosperous villages in Waterland.
This luxury was also visible in the stately houses that the Broekers had built, with the most beautiful interiors. In a number of monumental buildings, the original interior can still be admired. The monumental buildings can also be recognized by the pastel colors. Monnickendam fits in the list of tourist places such as Volendam and Edam that are true hotspots for tourists from across the oceans. It has a beautiful historic city center.
Monnickendam
When you drive into Monnickendam, the St. Nicholas Church towers above the city panorama. Monnickendam has a protected cityscape with many historic houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the inner harbor is the 'Waegh' where cheese used to be inspected and weighed. Later, women accused of witchcraft were also weighed there. It was checked whether they were light enough to be a witch. Monnickendam has been known for its fish smokehouses since the distant past. Fish is still smoked in the harbor and you will undoubtedly smell it.
You continue cycling along the banks of the Gouwzee, an inland waterway of the Markermeer, and then cycle via the small towns of Uitdam and Durgerdam over Zeeburgereiland back into Amsterdam.
