Description

So that's something different, start for a bike ride in the heart of Amsterdam! Amsterdam is of course a cycling city par excellence. Everything and everyone here is touring through the narrow streets, along the canals and by bike you can dart around everywhere where the car is constantly stuck on the one-way roads.

Diemerpark
From the starting point you follow the canal and cross the bridge into the Diemerpark. Here the city residents go for a breath of fresh air, go for a run or take a nice walk. There is plenty of room to play and experience nature adventurously. The park forms the natural connection with Muiden. This fortified city is of course known for the Muiderslot, but it offers even more. There was a large powder factory there and Muiden was the center of the powder industry. The so-called Kruitpad that you cycle over is a reminder of this. This piece of cultural history is monitored by the Kruitpad Muiden Heritage Foundation. Weesp used to be a fortified city and had an important position in the Dutch Waterline.

Forts
The fortress with the Tower Fort on the Ossenmarkt and the forts in the surrounding area were part of the New Dutch Waterline and later also of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Fort Uitermeer is located east of Weesp. The purpose of the fort was to protect the land passages between the Naardermeer and the Vecht. All that remains of the original building is a beautiful round tower fortress.

Shipping
The cycle route continues along the Vecht. In the Golden (17th) century, wealthy Amsterdam merchants had chic country estates built along the Vecht. Not much remains of it, but the banks of the Vecht continue to maintain a stately appearance. The Amsterdam Rhine Canal is one of the busiest shipping routes. The straight line through the landscape from Amsterdam to Tiel connects the Amsterdam port with the German Ruhr area. You cycle back into Amsterdam via the Gaasp. On your left you pass the long infamous Bijlmermeer.

Bijlmermeer
This district has now been thoroughly renovated and is one of the most pleasant social neighborhoods in Amsterdam. The last part of the city you pass through before you return to the starting point is Watergraafsmeer. This largely consists of polder and is one of the lowest parts of Amsterdam. The area is quite green because of the allotments, Frankendael park and the beautiful green cemetery De Nieuwe Ooster. There are also many sports facilities, including the famous Jaap Edenbaan.
