Description

This route takes you through the area of Wedde. From here you walk past Huis te Wedde, a castle that originally dates from the fourteenth century. The Lords of Westerwolde resided in this stately building for centuries. Nearby, the Westerwoldse Aa stream meanders, which you walk right past. Then you continue to Wedde and Wedderheide. You will pass Castle Ossedijk - Vriescheloo and Castle Koeweg - Vriescheloo, two of the four castles that you can admire around Vriescheloo. The castles were recently built by Bram Boekestijn, a former flower merchant, who wanted to create a castle settlement in this way. All four are used as residences. In Veelerveen you can see Niemans Molen, a flour mill from 1916.
