Tour of Old Pekela and Ruiten Aa

Nearby you will discover the Westerwoldse or Ruiten Aa, a stream that is also called the backbone of Westerwolde. You cycle a long way through this lovely stream valley, it is one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands! The beautifully meandering water leads you through a variety of convex fields, hay meadows, bushes and hedgerows. Further on you pass through Oude Pekela, named after the river Pekel A, which takes its name from the salinized water. The water stream flowed into the sea, but sea water also ran into the river. The region around the Pekel A has been inhabited for thousands of years. It used to be one elongated village along the water - the peat was mainly transported by water.
