Description

In the region where the Netherlands is narrowest, you will find two special places: Stevensweert and Ohé & Laak, on the former Island in the Maas. On the Maasdijk you have a beautiful view over the river, on the other side of the water is Belgium. Part of Stevensweert enjoys a protected cityscape, and you can still recognize the former fortifications in the street pattern. Also take a look at the St. Stephen's Church, which dates from 1781. The Molenplas was created by gravel extraction. There is now plenty of natural beauty to be found along the banks. You will see shrubs such as hawthorn, but also small forests of willows and alders. Here you walk past the tree monument: black oak trunks that were buried by Maas gravel 2000 years ago and emerged during gravel extraction!
