Recreational area Het Twiske has an area of 650 hectares, one third of which consists of water. There are six marked walking routes, of which the Roemer Route is one. This runs through the Oostzanerpolder. Scottish highlanders keep part of the area open so that it does not become overgrown with trees and shrubs. Where they cannot graze, a dense polder forest has now developed of beech, maple, ash, pedunculate oak, alder and Scots pine. Fallen trees are left in place so that insects and mushrooms have free rein. Here you can encounter typical forest birds such as the spotted woodpecker, jay, blackcap and sparrowhawk. You walk a bit over the Stooter Pass via a plank. This water is originally a sand extraction pit and is up to 35 meters deep in some places. That's why it never freezes over and Scandinavian wigeons come to spend the winter here.
