Description

Experience how you walk on Zaans marsh peat and enjoy the many lands and ditches that characterize the Zaan region. The birdwatcher will recognize the meadow birds: black-tailed godwit, oystercatcher, lapwing and redshank can be found there. Frans Mars and Freek Engel (Zaanse 20th century painters) made countless works of this world of meadows and water. It was their source of inspiration. For Freek Engel (1872-1958) these were mainly the meadows with cows. Frans Mars (1903-1973) was a windmill painter. Of the many mills that once stood in the country, only three remain, of which paper mill De Schoolmeester is more than worth a visit.

NB. not accessible during the bird breeding season (March 15 to Aug. 1). Dogs are prohibited and waterproof shoes are a must because of the swampy land.

Tip: during the Pentecost weekend you can actually walk on water. Then more islands will be opened to the public by Staatsbosbeheer.
