Colijnsplaat
With the wind you continue along the Oosterschelde. Colijnsplaat, a little further on, enjoys a protected village view. The village is known for the Miracle of Colijnsplaat during the Flood Disaster of 1953: when a flood defense threatened to collapse, a freighter that had broken loose due to the storm ended up in front of the flood defence. This prevented Colijnsplaat from flooding.
Celtic settlement
In Roman antiquity, near Colijnsplaat, there was a Celtic settlement called Ganuenta. In this settlement stood a temple in honor of the goddess Nehalennia who had power over trade and shipping. Skippers made sacrifices here for a safe crossing to Britain. In 1970, some Nehalennia altars were fished from the Oosterschelde near Colijnsplaat. At the beginning of this century, a Gallo-Roman temple was reconstructed near the harbor.
