Alkmaar's historic city center is perfect for exploring by bike. From the city, you can easily cycle into the expansive polder landscape, reaching the Alkmaardermeer and Uitgeestermeer lakes.
Twin Lake
In the polder, you'll cycle through a characteristically Dutch landscape of grasslands, ditches, and high skies. In this surprisingly peaceful area, you'll have ample opportunity to take in the sights. You'll pass the Noordermolen windmill, dating from 1589, and a little further on, the Oude Knegt corn mill. Along the banks of the Alkmaardermeer and Uitgeestermeer lakes, you can pause for a moment and gaze out over the rippling water. A perfect way to clear your head.
Old cheese town
Limmen has become the center of bulb growing. Every spring, the Flower Days are held here. You can also visit the Hortus Bulborum, a unique museum garden that now houses over 4,000 different spring bulbs. In Alkmaar, you can visit many historic buildings. The old city center boasts no fewer than 399 national monuments – wow!
