The old city centre of Alkmaar is easy to explore by bike. From the city you can also cycle straight into the vast polder to the Alkmaarder- and Uitgeestermeer.
Twin Lake
In the polder you cycle through a characteristic Dutch landscape of grasslands, ditches and high skies. In this surprisingly quiet area you can look around you again. You pass the Noordermolen from 1589 and, a little further on, the corn mill de Oude Knegt. Along the banks of the Alkmaarder- and Uitgeestermeer you can take a break and quietly look out over the rippling water. An ideal way to clear your head.
Old cheese town
Limmen has become the centre of bulb cultivation. Every spring, the Flower Days are held here. You can also visit the Hortus Bulborum, a unique museum garden where more than 4000 different spring bulbs have been collected. In Alkmaar you can visit many historical buildings. In the old city centre there are no less than 399 national monuments, wow!
