Westerveen (a meadow with water feature)

The Westerveen is a small peat bog located west of the village of Peest in Drenthe. during the Second World War, the Germans tried to build an airfield here. However, due to the swampy peat soil, the airport has not been put into use. The Westerveen is also popularly referred to as the Hitlerring , after Adolf Hitler.

Partly reclaimed heathland on a sand ridge between two valleys north of Zeijen, just now a hunebed, many burial mounds, a few so-called high fields and parts of an extensive Celtic Field (on old military maps listed as'Roman camp\\\').
