Description
Explore the surroundings of the former mining village of Veenendaal. This route takes you through rolling landscapes and quiet forests with a wealth of historic buildings such as windmills and country houses.
House Scherpenzeel
In the 14th century there was already a fortified house on the site of this house. In the mid-nineteenth century, the house took on the shape it still looks today. A modest, symmetrical and graceful house. The surrounding park is about six hectares in size and was laid out in the English landscape style. The Scherpenzeel House served as a town hall for a number of years, but nowadays the house is owned by the Friends of the Geldersche Kasteelen Foundation. The surrounding estate has always remained family property. Over the centuries, the house has been owned by both Utrecht and Gelderland, as it was on the border of Gelre and the Sticht Utrecht.

Soon after boarding you will pass the Nieuwe Molen, a corn mill from 1911. This mill was built with parts of a water mill from North Holland and it replaced the mill that previously stood on this site. You then cycle up the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where you ride for miles through an oasis of tranquility. All you hear are the chirping birds or the ticking sound of a woodpecker.
