Description
South of Rotterdam lies a surprising hiking destination: the pilot whales and polders of the island of IJsselmonde. Outside the dike you can wander through the Carnisse Grienden, where the water of the Oude Maas flows in twice a day. Inside the dike are ancient fields, enclosed by dikes. There were plans to transform these polders into wet nature, but it has now been decided to preserve this historic landscape. This route is an initiative of the Association Carnisse Grienden.
Practical information
Parking
Car: on the A29 take exit 20/Barendrecht and follow the signs to Carnisselande. Take the roundabout three quarters, drive towards Waterkant and immediately turn left (Zuider-Carnisseweg). Turn right just before the end (Koodood). Follow the road for 900 m and then turn left uphill. The parking lot is behind the dike.
Not allowed
The Molenpolderse Zeedijk is forbidden for dogs (between walking junctions 49 and 48). In the green areas along the Oude Maas they have to be on a leash. Watch the signs!
Largely unsuitable
In dry weather, part of the trails in the Carnisse Grienden are accessible to wheelchairs. Furthermore, the route largely goes over unpaved (grass) paths, with occasional transfers.
Catering nearby
At walking junction 22 you can turn right to Brasserie Rhoonse Polder (near the golf course). Click on the link for current opening hours. In corona time there is often a food truck with winter soups and sandwiches until 5 p.m. There are also several catering establishments at the Havenhoofd in Barendrecht, not far from the tram and bus stops.

Public transport
In Rotterdam, take bus line 183 from Zuidplein or tram line 25 from Rotterdam Central to Barendrecht. Get off at the Waterkant stop. Walk further to the turning loop of the tram and take the bridge behind it to walking junction 51. Pick up the route here. See 9292.nl for details.
