Tour of Leekster- and Hoornsemeer and Groningen

Around the Leekstermeer, you cycle through rugged low-lying peatlands in the valley between the higher sandy soils of Drenthe and the clay soils of Groningen. These are the Onlanden, with vast grasslands, but also groves and hedgerows. In Lettelbert, you can visit a small, squat church from the thirteenth century. You also cycle through the hamlet of Peizermade. 'Made' means meadow or grassland, so it refers to the meadow near Peize. In the past, this was an extremely wet area that often flooded. You cycle through the Stadspark into the city of Groningen, home to the Groninger Museum. Make a brief stop in charming Groningen and then cycle back via the Hoornsemeer, on the border between the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen. Together with the Paterswoldsemeer, it forms the Drenthe-Groningen lake district.
