Description
Plan a few days off for this multi-day cycling route and immerse yourself in the history of the New Dutch Waterline defence line, nominated as a World Heritage Site.
Admire the forts from the outside and, where possible, take a guided tour of a fort to learn more about the history of these structures.
This tough ride is not the shortest route, but you will cycle along almost all the forts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The rivers sometimes cause a big detour, look at the sailing times of various bicycle ferries and deviate from the route if desired. You can ride the route in both directions or ride in parts.
Only the four Lunetten near Utrecht and the Verdedigingswerk near Vreeswijk are not on the route, but for the rest you can see all the forts of this defense line from your bike. In one case a detour is taken to show more (different) parts. At the rivers Lek and Waal you can deviate from the route for ferry services or bridges, depending on the season.
