Description
Trekschuiten were the public transport of the 17th century, Leiden and Oegstgeest formed an important junction in the towboat network. In 1656 the Haarlemmertrekvaart was built, from here people left for Haarlem and Amsterdam. The Trekvaartroute (18.5 km cycling through Leiden and Oegstgeest) lets you see and experience these historic waterways. There is also plenty to do along the way and there are various departure points.
