Description

You take a nice walk to the nature reserve. De Borkeld is a sloping area where you see an extensive heathland with juniper bushes. This is the largest juniper thicket in the Netherlands! The highest peak, the Friezenberg, is 40 meters high. You can also walk through young forests, fields and grasslands. There is even a piece of raised bog: the Elsenerveen. You will find bell gentian, sundew and cotton grass there. Pheasants, nuthatches and woodpeckers also live there. In addition, you will see many prehistoric burial mounds in the Borkeld, which are between 6,000 and 4,000 years old. It is an archaeological reserve, where traces of the hunters and gatherers of 13,000 years ago have even been found, such as stone axes and skin scrapers.
