Tour of Heksenplas in the Kruisbergse forests

Your walking route starts at Het Wapen van Heeckeren. The route takes you through the Kruisbergse Bossen, a nature reserve that lies on 10,000 year old river dunes. At the beginning of the era, the Romans set up camp in these rolling forests. It is now a very varied area with coniferous and deciduous trees, coppice, hedgerows and wooded banks interspersed with fens and pools, poor grasslands and agricultural lands. You will also find the Heksenplas there. In the past, special aquatic vegetation and amphibians were found here, but some of these have disappeared. Restoration of the Heksenplas should ensure that the species present can move further across the area and that extinct species can re-establish themselves. For example, eggs and larvae of the rare crested newt have been found.
