Tour of Heksenplas in the Kruisberg forests

Your walking route starts at Het Wapen van Heeckeren. The route takes you through the Kruisbergse Bossen, a nature reserve located on 10,000-year-old river dunes. Romans camped in these rolling forests at the beginning of the common era. It is now a very varied area with coniferous and deciduous wood, coppice, hedgerows and windbreaks interspersed with fens and ponds, poor grasslands and agricultural land. You will also find the Heksenplas there. Special aquatic vegetation and amphibians used to be found here, but some of these have disappeared. Restoration of the Heksenplas must ensure that the existing species can move further across the area and that disappeared species can reestablish themselves. For example, eggs and larvae of the rare great crested newt have been found.
