Tour of Zelhem and Doetinchem

Your cycling route starts at TOP Zelhem. At the Markt you can admire the beautiful Lamberti Church. You drive past Saxon farms to Doetinchem. Stop off en route at Herberg Het Onland, on the Slangenburg Estate! As early as 838, Doetinchem was mentioned as Duetinghem, a settlement with a church. Now it is the largest city in the region. The last part of the route takes you along the Oude IJssel. This watercourse originates in Germany and was once a branch of the Rhine. It now flows into the IJssel near Doesburg. The Dutch iron industry emerged along the Oude IJssel at the end of the seventeenth century. Here, iron ore was mined a few meters underground and used as a raw material in local iron foundries.
