City walk Heusden and Old Heusden

Your walk starts at Minicamping De Reekens. From here you quickly walk into the fortified town of Heusden. In the atmospheric Heusden all the fortified monuments are within walking distance of each other. The fortified town was founded around 1200 at the castle of the Lords of Heusden. Strategically located on the Maas as an important link between the Biesbosch and 's-Hertogenbosch. The fortified past of Heusden can be felt in almost every stone. You walk back along the location of Heusden Castle in Oud Heusden. This was completely destroyed when a keep (locally called the 'De Dikke Brabander') caught fire in the seventeenth century. 60,000 pounds of gunpowder exploded. Part of the castle has been rebuilt with modern materials. This gives you an idea of how impressive this building once was!
