The Friese Wouden (Northeast Friesland)

This route leads you through the beautiful tree-rich Friese Wouden. This so-called bocage landscape is unique in the Netherlands. The wings are formed by tree banks around meadows. The route leads alternately along these wooded banks and  along beautiful views in the Buitenposter, Twijzeler and Surhuizumer Mieden and  the Bergumermeer and the lake De Leijen.  It is worth taking a look at the'De Leijen\\\' pavilion in Rottevalle and enjoy the breathtaking view over the lake of the same name with a cup of coffee.   A visit to Open Air Museum De Spitkeet in Harkema gives you the opportunity to get an idea of the history of the area and its inhabitants on the basis of newly built'old\\\' houses. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee there.  The route also passes the national monument'it Poepekrús\\\'. This excavated cross is located on the Harstewei, a side road of De Opperkoatsterwei, just past Twijzel. The cross of approx. 1580 marks the spot where a German Poep, or hannekemower, was murdered in the late 16th century. The dirt road was once part of the Leeuwarden-Groningen through road.  In short, the varied route is well worth cycling. The route alternates between cobblestone roads and asphalt. Afe there is a sand path in between.
