Description

Your cycling route starts at Camping De Vinkenkamp, on the edge of the Veluwe. Today's tour takes you around Apeldoorn. In the village of Lieren you pass the Beekbergen VSM (Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij) station, a stop of the tourist steam train that commutes between Apeldoorn and Dieren. The line was constructed in 1887 at the initiative of King William III. Then you drive through Apeldoorn. Around 1800 this was just a village. Over the course of the nineteenth century, it rapidly grew into a city that is now known for its many beautiful Art Nouveau buildings. The Beekberger Forest was once the last remaining primeval forest in the Netherlands. The last tree was felled in 1871. Part of the area is being developed into a nature reserve again.
