Your cycling route starts at Camping De Vinkenkamp, on the edge of the Veluwe. Today's tour leads you around Apeldoorn. In the village of Lieren you pass the station Beekbergen VSM (Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij), a stop of the tourist steam train that commutes between Apeldoorn and Dieren. The line was built in 1887 at the initiative of King Willem III. Then you drive through Apeldoorn. By 1800 this was just a village. In the course of the nineteenth century it grew rapidly into a city that is now known for its many beautiful Jugendstil buildings. The Beekbergerwoud was once the last remaining primeval forest in the Netherlands. The last tree was felled in 1871. Part of the area is being redeveloped into a nature reserve.
