Past locks and forts

The cycle route Along Locks and Forts gives a beautiful picture of the military heritage in Utrecht's backyard. The route takes you through the Kromme Rijn region and lets you discover the area around the medieval Wijk bij Duurstede. The historic landscape of the New Dutch Waterline is exceptionally well preserved there and can still be fully experienced.

New Dutch Waterline
Be surprised by forts, trenches, dikes, locks, canals, casemates and group shelters. Together, these elements formed an ingenious system that used to protect the Netherlands against enemy troops; the New Dutch Waterline. By flooding the land about fifty centimeters, it became impassable for soldiers and too shallow for boats. Will you cycle along to discover this quintessential Dutch defense system from the 19th and 20th centuries?
