Tour of the Frisian Wouden: Waskmar and the Duurswouderheide

Your walk starts at Camping & Cycling/Walking Terrace De Ikeleane. It is located in the Frisian Wouden, a beautiful quiet nature reserve southeast of the Frisian town of Drachten. From here you take a nice tour through the Duurswouderheide, a sub-area of the Frisian Wouden. Here you will discover beautiful fens, such as the'Waskmar\\\' or Waskemeer. On maps from the nineteenth century it is called'Waze Meer\\\' and it was a lot larger. The sheep were washed in the fen, hence the name, which means washing lake. Here you can fully enjoy the characteristic small-scale scenic landscape of the Frisian Wouden: a backdrop of forests, hedgerows, grasslands and winding streams. It is more reminiscent of Drenthe than of Friesland: you will encounter more forests than lakes!
