Tour of the castles of Vriescheloo

The starting point of your cycling route is Villapark Weddermeer in the town of Wedde, in Westerwolde. It is beautifully situated on the Weddermeer in the Westerwoldsche Aa. From here you can walk to Wedderheide and Vriescheloo. You will pass Ossedijk Castle - Vriescheloo and Koeweg Castle - Vriescheloo, two of the four castles that you can admire around Vriescheloo. The castles were recently built by Bram Boekestijn, a former flower trader, who wanted to create a castle settlement. All four are used as homes. The village of Vriescheloo itself emerged a long time ago as a place of residence for everyone involved in peat extraction in the area. Later it grew into a ribbon village. Then you walk back through the Wedderbergen, a wooded nature reserve that lies along the Weddermeer and the Westerwoldsche Aa.
