Description

In the past, rivers were not only used to transport people and goods. They often also formed a natural division between regions or countries. This also applies to the Meuse, which separates the Netherlands and Belgium, but also the provinces of Gelderland and North Brabant. This route takes you along the Maas between Heusden and Den Bosch, but also through the Bommelerwaard located just above the river. A long day full of nature and culture!

You will pass through Heusden, a fortified town restored in the old style. Take your time to visit this town, thanks to the many centuries-old buildings and fortifications it feels like you are traveling back in time. You drive along the Maas to the old village of Bokhoven. You cycle along the canalized Dieze into the nature reserve around the Engelermeer. Here you will find a mixture of swamp forests, reed beds and cultivated land.

The route takes you a bit through's-Hertogenbosch. If you have time, feel free to take a look at the old historic center. Those who prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city can continue to the other side of the Maas. Here you cycle through the Gelderse Bommelerwaard. In a sense, this area is an island, as it is completely surrounded by rivers. The Bommelerwaard partly owes its special character to the river water. If you cycle over winding dikes along the Maas, you will see trees with their feet in the water, grasslands with abundantly blooming flowers and vast floodplains full of water birds.

There are also some beautiful historic buildings on the Gelderland part of the Maas. In Ammerzoden, for example, there is Ammersoyen Castle, a medieval moated castle with a wide moat and striking corner towers. It is one of the best preserved authentic medieval castles in the Netherlands and is truly a sight to see. A little further away is Well Castle, a moated castle that originally dates from the fourteenth century.
