Your route starts in Veenhuizen, which was set up in 1818 by the Society of Benevolence as an agricultural colony for vagrants, beggars, orphans and foundlings. In contrast to the colony in Frederiksoord, Veenhuizen took a more coercive approach, for which a total of three asylum buildings were erected. The moated buildings, of which only the Tweede Gesticht (now National Prison Museum) remains, had a square shape with long sides of about 125 metres. Veenhuizen later became a penitentiary. Veenhuizen was considered by many to be the'Siberia of the Netherlands\\\'. Via the thirteenth-century church of Norg you cycle to Paterswolde, known for its beautiful villas and manor houses. Then you drive to Roderesch.
