Description

The Paterswoldsemeer was excavated around 1800 by peat extraction. From 1900 the lake mainly became a recreational lake. The lake on Groningen territory has been significantly expanded with the Hoornse Plas (1976) and the Hoornsemeer (1982).

Eelde/Paterswolde with the estates

The village of Eelde is mentioned in a document as early as 1139 and Paterswolde in 1447. Paterswolde became part of Eelde after the Second World War. The area is known for its beautiful villas and estates. The route comes close to:

De Braak

The De Braak estate includes a monumental park. The park was designed in landscape style by landscape architect Roodbaard in the 19th century. Characteristic are winding lanes, vistas and graceful ponds. At De Braak you will find a maze and a berceau consisting of beech trees that are woven together at the tops.

Havezate Vennebroek

In addition to the manor, the Vennebroek Estate also consists of the Friese Veen nature reserve. The current building dates from 1848. The pond is surrounded by old beeches and chestnuts. The oldest is more than 300 years old and has a trunk circumference of 4.7 meters. The Frisian Veen is an area with swamp forest, water and reedlands. It was created after peat extraction in the first half of the 19th century.

Havezate Lemferdinge

It is not known when the Lemferdinge estate was built. In documents out
1447 it is already mentioned. There used to be a large country house with a canal, two
treasure houses and stands. Today the estate consists of a treasure house and gardens.

Vosbergen

The villa and the estate were created around 1900. The Kraus-Groeneveld couple bought a farm and some forest in 1890. The current park is laid out in the English Landscape Style.

Havezate Oosterbroek
Oostebroek originally stood in the 15th century on the Borgstee site to the east of the current location. Little is known about that building. The current house dates from 1830 with renovations from 1924. During WWII it was requisitioned by Germans. There is a beautiful starry forest along the cycle path.

House in Glimmen
Huis te Glimmen is hidden on a moated site on the east bank of the Drentsche Aa. The current House was built around the 16th century on the foundations of a motte-and-bailey castle destroyed in 1227. The associated Quintusbos was created around 1820.

Noordlaren

The most striking buildings in the esdorp Noordlaren are the Stellingmolen from 1849 and the Protestant St. Bartholomew's Church. The oldest part of the church dates from the 12th century and the tower, founded on boulders, dates from the early 13th century. A 15th century mural is still visible in the church.

Zuidlaardermeer

The Zuidlaardermeer is a natural widening of the Hunze and was created at the end of the last ice age, about 7,000 years ago. So many different birds can be found along the banks and on the lake that it has been declared a protected bird area.
