The versatile Lummen consists of a few picturesque hamlets. The area has various elements of the Hageland, Haspengouw and the Kempen. Rolling fields, beautiful fruit orchards and a sandy soil with heathlands, forests and peatlands. The area surrounding Lummen is a small-scale landscape and you will come across small villages where the cozy 'know-us' feeling still exists. The industry is firmly established in Lummen itself; there are four industrial zones. This means that the town in the Hasselt district can safely be called an economic growth pole. There are nice sights, including a number of beautiful castles. The artificially created Schulensmeer offers you a beautiful, panoramic view. With a bit of luck you will see one of the dozens of fish species in the lake jumping happily out of the water. Halen is a city that had a hard time during the First World War. In 1914, the Battle of the Silver Helmets took place here, in which the Belgians defeated the German cavalry. A beautiful museum has been established in the municipality about this historic battle. Halen has traditionally been a transhipment point where cargo from larger inland vessels was transferred to smaller inland vessels, but the largest economic activity was the cloth trade. The location of the current town hall used to house the Lakenhal, where all types of sheets were sold and purchased.
