Description
This route takes you through Breskens, the cozy Zeeuws-Vlaanderen town on the Western Scheldt. In the wide polders you will find plenty of peace and natural beauty, such as at the Groote Gat.
Breskens
You will pass the windmill of Risseeuw. This striking hull is from a former flour mill from 1858. Further on you will pass Mobile Bicycle Service, a mobile workshop that repairs your broken bicycle on the spot in West-Zeeuws Vlaanderen on demand. Just before the hamlet of Number One you pass through a small-scale forest. In the polders you cycle on roads where few cars drive, wonderful!
Big Hole
The Groote Gat was once part of a larger creek system that was connected to Het Zwin. In 1604 the Spaniards included this creek in their Line of Oostburg, there are still remains of forts. The current nature reserve consists of a creek, damp and saline grass lanes, reed beds and thickets. At the Markt in Groede you can taste the atmosphere of days gone by. You will see beautiful monumental buildings and an ancient village church.
