IJsselstein owes its name to the Hollandse IJssel and originated as a settlement near IJsselstein Castle. The centre of IJsselstein has great cultural-historical value. The contours have remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages and the regular street pattern also dates from the Middle Ages. In Montfoort you drive through the historic street Om't Hof. It connects Hofstraat with De Plaats, where the outer bailey of Montfoort Castle used to be. The beautiful historic Oudewater boasts Stadhuis Visbrug, the monumental town hall from 1588. It was rebuilt after the destruction by the Spanish army and is still in use. The rich past of Woerden, including special finds from Roman times, can be seen in the former town hall from 1501.
