Papendrecht, South Holland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 1920408
Provided by: Groots Genieten
From the starting point you cycle through the Alblasserwaard, an extensive peat meadow area. The Alblasserwaard has its own regional culture with regional customs, language and a typical architectural style. You cycle to Kinderdijk, where sixteen polder mills were built in 1738 to protect the village from the water. The second mill on the west side of the Middelkade can be visited. The mills are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, not only because of the mills themselves, but also because all the technology that has been used for water management since the Middle Ages can be seen here. At Oud-Alblas you cycle along the winding river Alblas. You cycle back to your starting point through the Alblasserbos. A forest is a rarity in this vast region.
